Book Description
On vacation in Italy, Jerry, a young American who is bored in his hotel where he is awaiting the arrival of his sister and his aunt, tries to meet Constance, a pretty, young American who lives in the neighboring village. Thirsty for local color, she only wants to speak with Italians, and turns him down. Disheartened, Jerry decides to leave the hotel, when he overhears a conversation in which he learns that Constance is looking for a donkey driver, the most Italian and as quaint as possible, for a mountain expedition. Jerry decides to impersonate this donkey driver, and disguises himself as a superb specimen of local color. The expedition begins, and Jerry piles on the lies to explain his ignorance of Italian, while Constance, who has secretly recognized him, takes pleasure in making him go to great lengths to play the role of a poor, submissive donkey driver. What started as an innocent joke soon becomes a romantic imbroglio where lies flirt with the truth and love with fate.
Misunderstandings, coincidences and sparkling conversations meet up in this delicious novel that transports us with finesse to a place under the radiant Italian sun for a story of love and humor.
